SOCIAL & CULTURAL
The Burns Social and Cultural Collection documents people and events related to social and labor movements. Political protests, communist party marches, teamster strikes, the Ku Klux Klan, and various fraternities and men’s groups are portrayed. Notable women and their social clubs, groups, literary societies, temperance and abolitionist organizations, and occupational groups are represented, as well as women’s labor movements. Albums focused on community, co-operatives, and missionary work are highlights. The collection includes photographs of the St. Petersburg Women’s Battalion of Death, a World War I group of Russian female soldiers with shaved heads, and an important ambrotype of Dr. Mary Walker, American Civil War physician and controversial figure in the suffrage movement.
