DISEASE & PATHOLOGY
Photographs of the extremes of disease and unusual case studies are a remarkable and unique part of the Burns Disease and Pathology Collection. Especially notable are images of disease states prior to the discovery of antibiotics, steroids, vaccines, sanitary health practices, insect vectors, and food and drug regulations. The collection depicts diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis, and smallpox cases in all of their manifestations, including the bone extrusion and body sinus conditions seen in severe cases of tuberculosis. The ravages of untreated disease, tumors, and trauma due to the fears of treatment are extraordinary documents of pre-antiseptic surgical practice.
