JUDAICA

The Burns Judaica Collection is comprised of thousands of photographs of Jewish people and practices throughout the world. It documents the founding of Israel, Hasidic and Orthodox life, the Holocaust, post-war immigration, and much more, such as twentieth century albums of Jewish families in the United States and Europe. It contains special collections including those by Kalman Weiss, a Hasidic photographer from Mea Shearim, one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem, as well as commercial and blockade-running photographs by Wallace Litwin. The core of the collection is images of shtetls and city life, documenting the two major values of the community: Yidishkeyt (Jewishness) and Menschlikhkeyt (humanness).
