| The Women & Women's Movement Collection documents the activities
of women in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Aside
from images of women notables the archive contains numerous images
of women's groups this includes social clubs, literary societies,
temperance and abolitionist organizations and occupational groups.
The women's labor, suffragette and anti-war movements are well
represented. Special groups are notable such as the famous Russian
shaved head soldiers- The St. Petersburg Woman Squadron of Death.
Many images are unique such as the 1858 ambrotype of Civil War
physician and medal of Honor winner Dr. Mary Walker. Walker invented
the pant suit and was a popular and controversial figure in the
suffragette movement. |
