Criminology

The Criminology Collection consists of photographs of crime scenes, executions, law enforcement, criminals, penal institutions, forensic sciences, and the photographs relating to the history of crime detection and punishment. We specialize in vigilante and extralegal justice systems and have numerous unique images in these fields. The archive has one of the worlds largest collections of lynching images, which is the source of a forthcoming book and exhibit. Law enforcement, "Police" images from the 1840's to the 1940's are well represented. Also available are numerous photo's taken after death of notorious criminals i.e., Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Jesse James, etc. American and foreign execution practices are depicted in hundreds of photographs many from unique albums. War executions in numerous conflicts are represented and include many rare scenes such as Japanese executing American soldiers, Croatians beheading captives in WWI, etc.
